How to make a herringbone weave?

Today Veronik Bijoux shares with you a tutorial to make a Miyuki 11/0 seed bead weaving cuff . To make this jewel it is essential to master two techniques:

- herringbone weaving for the cuff itself
- peyote weaving and circular peyote weaving for the creation of the pearl clasp.

For beginners in pearl weaving, discover in our technical sheets all the necessary information to get started:

This cuff is made in shades of fuchsia pink, a trendy color of the winter and which does not fail to stand out. And yes, this year bright colors will be all the rage all year long, summer and winter! Change the colours of this jewel according to your desires by creating new combinations of Miyuki 11/0 seed beads. In the same way, the abstract pattern can be adapted by letting your imagination run wild and creating your own diagram, the result will be just as pretty!

The woven part of the cuff measures 17cm X 3,8 cm. The total dimension of the bracelet is 19cm (clasp included). It is up to you to adapt the measurement to your wrist size. To do this, add or remove rows from the diagram.

Take your Miyuki 11/0 seed beads, thread and beading needle and let us guide you. Don't forget to show us your creation by sharing it with us on social networks

Tutorial steps

Step 1
DIY Cuff with abstract herringbone weave and peyote in Miyuki beads 11/0 : Step 1

To start, string 4 R11's, go back through the first two to weave the beads side by side and out the top of the last two.

You will then string 2 R11's and proceed in the same way until you have a total of 18 beads and all following the design (or not if you prefer to make your own design).

This technique is called ladder stitch, and I suggest weaving them 2 by 2 so that the base is solid.

Step 2

At the end of your row, you will get this. We can now begin our herringbone weaving.

Step 3
DIY Cuff with abstract herringbone weave and peyote in Miyuki beads 11/0 : Step 3

Thread 2 R11's and stick your needle into the bead immediately below.

Step 4
DIY Cuff with abstract herringbone weave and peyote in Miyuki beads 11/0 : Step 4

Pull out into the next bead. Your 2 beads (pink here) will fall into place by themselves (in a herringbone pattern) but if they don't, help them by pressing lightly with your fingers.

Step 5
DIY Cuff with abstract herringbone weave and peyote in Miyuki beads 11/0 : Step 5

At the end of your row, to avoid your thread showing on the side when you come back up, pass your needle under the visible thread between the two beads of the previous row and come out by the last bead threaded. Don't tighten it too much to avoid distorting this part of the weaving.

This picture taken from above shows you the thread you have to pass under.

You can then continue your weaving. To follow the design more easily, the weaving will be done one row from the left to the right, one row from the right to the left.

Step 6
DIY Cuff with abstract herringbone weave and peyote in Miyuki beads 11/0 : Step 6

The first few rows may seem irregular. Don't worry, if you don't tighten your thread too much, the weave will be perfect after a few rows.

Now you just have to weave until your cuff has the desired dimension.

Step 7

Here is a picture of the finished cuff, with the colours used. This will help you if you want to follow this diagram, but also if you want to change some colours.

Step 8
DIY Cuff with abstract herringbone weave and peyote in Miyuki beads 11/0 : Step 8

Now that your cuff has the desired size, you will proceed to the weaving and to the installation of the clasp.

For the clasp bar, it is a tube woven in peyote. I used 2 colours: dark fushia and fluorescent pink. Thread a fushia bead, a neon pink bead, etc. until you get 17 beads. Weave in peyote until you get a strip of 6 rows of fushia, and 6 rows of fluorescent pink as shown in the photo.

Step 9
DIY Cuff with abstract herringbone weave and peyote in Miyuki beads 11/0 : Step 9

You will form a tube with this strip. To do this, you will pass your needle through the beads in the air (not the hollow beads). One fushia, one pink, one fushia, one pink, etc. We say that we close by zipping. The beads will set up and by pulling slightly on your thread, you will form your tube.

Move your thread a little in the beads to consolidate your tube. Do not cut your thread!

Step 10
DIY Cuff with abstract herringbone weave and peyote in Miyuki beads 11/0 : Step 10

Take out your thread at the indicated bead, thread 6 Fushia beads to attach your clasp to the cuff.

Step 11
DIY Cuff with abstract herringbone weave and peyote in Miyuki beads 11/0 : Step 11

Be careful to count the beads where you place them on the picture, so that your clasp is well centered.

Prick your needle in the cuff to place the clasp, thread again 6 Fushia beads and re-pick in the clasp. Make several passes to consolidate.

Step 12

You will now weave the ring for your clasp, the last piece to weave for your cuff.

Thread one fushia, one neon pink, one fushia, one neon pink, etc. up to a total of 30 beads. Weave in a circular peyote! Look carefully at the photo, at one point so that the ring stays flat, it is 2 beads that are inserted and not 1.

Attach your ring to the other end of your cuff, in the same way as for the tube but threading 3 beads and not 6.

And here is your cuff finished!
