How to make Christmas wreaths?

Also known as the Advent wreath, the Christmas wreath is one of the first signs that Christmas is almost here! It is usually hung on the front door to welcome visitors in a warm and stylish way. But there's nothing to stop you from hanging it on the living room wall, on a closet door, on a window handle... or even on a piece of furniture or in the center of the table.
A centuries-old tradition, the wreath has been reinvented over the years with different ornaments, plants and decoration. Today, it has become the must-have in Christmas decoration and there is something for everyone!

When to make the Christmas wreath?

Traditionally, it should be ready by the fourth Sunday before December 25th. Originally, the wreath was placed on the center of the table and was made of four candles that were lit every Sunday before Christmas.
But it doesn't matter which day you choose to put out your decoration, does it? The important thing is to create a festive and festive atmosphere from the entrance of the house while waiting for Christmas.

What to make a Christmas wreath with?

Wire, a hot glue gun, a pair of scissors and a pair of wire cutters are some of the essential materials to make your Christmas wreath.

For the base of the DIY Christmas wreath, we traditionally use interlaced foliage to form a circle.
But you're spoiled for choice! If you opt for a ready-made support, choose natural materials such as wicker or cork. For a more airy look, choose thin metal circles or even a coat hanger. And if you need to "prick" elements on it, a polystyrene circle will be perfect.

To decorate your Advent wreath, the best way is to let your imagination run wild!
Our preference is to use components that recall the magic of the holiday season, which is appreciated by children and adults alike:

  • Dried orange slices, star anise or cinnamon sticks that will give off a pleasant scent.
  • Snowflakes or wooden stars, colored or raw.
  • Ribbon.
  • Bells.
  • Paper to write a welcome note with a pretty marker or make origami stars.
  • Candles when the wreath is placed in the center of the table (use fake candles to prevent fire hazards, or do not light them).
  • Garlands.
  • Feathers.
  • Dried flowers or fabric flowers made by you.
  • Christmas ornaments of all colors and sizes.
  • Plants found in nature (be careful to clean them well so as not to be invaded by insects and wash your hands after handling them).
  • Elements made of soft material such as round pom-poms or objects cut out of felt.
  • Glitter.
  • Metallic, pearl, powder, pastel or flashy paint depending on your Christmas theme.

You can also take some decorative elements for your Christmas tree (the ones that are usually left in the boxes) or recycled materials to make a Zero Waste Christmas wreath. It's super trendy!

How to make your own Christmas wreath?

It all depends on the space you have and the atmosphere you want to create! Your wreath can be XXL, bushy, airy, designer, maximal, elegant, rustic, poetic, inventive, mini or even pure... The choice is yours!
Come on, we won't leave you like that! Check out our creative ideas for making a homemade Christmas wreath:

1. A NATURAL CHRISTMAS WREATH TO MAKE YOURSELF

How to make a natural Christmas wreath? For a simple and effective DIY Christmas decoration, think of plants collected in your garden or during your walks in the forest such as branches of fir, olive tree or laurel, mistletoe or holly, pine cones, acorn shells, hazelnuts, wood moss ... Get your kids involved, they'll be thrilled to be able to participate in creating this Christmas decoration.
How to make a wreath with pine cones? Tie them to your stand with copper wire. Embellish your wreath with branches, burlap rope, gold ribbon and wooden pucks. And there you have it, your natural styleChristmas wreath is done!

2. A EUCALYPTUS WREATH FOR AN EXOTIC TOUCH

Cynthia, aka Peek it Magazine, suggests in her tutorial to revisit the traditional Christmas wreath by replacing the fir branches with eucalyptus.
To add a touch of elegance to her"Christmas Wreath", she chose to insert some white wooden beads to imitate the white snowberry (a decorative shrub also called the bead tree).

3. A BOHEMIAN WREATH

For a bohemian yet natural holiday decor, opt for softer colors with a gold Mokuba metallic cord or a gold organza ribbon to cover a wooden circle, some white and bronze paint touches. Eucalyptus branches will complete the look. And here is a Christmas wreath ready to welcome your guests.

4. A MACRAMÉ WREATH

Make a macramé wreath with the color of yarn you like. Use it as is or create a magical setting by adding a string of lights. Sober and discreet, you can even keep it all year long. This will not clash with the rest of your bohemian decoration.

5. A HOMEMADE CHRISTMAS WREATH MADE OF POLYMER CLAY

Here is an original Christmas wreath made with Fimo clay that does not lack charm. We like the raw look of this decoration, highlighted by the golden color and white. If you want a more festive atmosphere, replace the ginkgo leaves by stars or Christmas decorations.

6. An ephemeral wreath

You can't hang a wreath on the door or walls, just draw it with a chalk marker or tape on one of the windows in your house or on a memo board. A great craft idea to do with your kids!
Another popular solution for foodies: make a wreath with popcorn, candy and/or homemade shortbread with star-shaped cookie cutters. However, we don't guarantee that it will last until New Year's Eve!

No more excuses not to make your DIY Christmas wreath... but also all the Christmas decoration! So, let's get started?
