The emery stick is an indispensable tool in jewelry making, used to sand (emery) your metal creations. In jewelry, sanding is the step that comes after filing. With the emery we will remove the scratches and prepare the jewel for polishing.
Once your emery paper is worn out, do not throw away your wooden stick. It is possible to re-coat it with one or more abrasive sheets.
Don't know which emery cloth grit to choose?
For metal parts, emery cloth is sanded in several steps: starting with 220 grit (the coarsest), then progressing to a finer grit and ending with 2000 grit (the finest).
Remember that the smaller the number, the coarser the grit.
- Between 150 and 240, it is for roughing.
- Between 240 and 600, it is for finishing.
- Between 800 and 2000, for advanced finishing.
A little tip: do not sand in the same direction. Always remember to cross the lines for optimal sanding.
When sanding, take certain precautions: protect yourself with a pair of gloves, goggles, a fine dust mask and work in a well-ventilated area.
