Offset your letters and trace them onto the colored felt of your choice.

In this Christmas DIY, we will make embroidered letter gift tags with beads and cannetille. These tags will be reusable from one year to the next. You can personalize them by choosing the initial of the person you want to give the gift to and their favorite color. These felt tags can also be used as place cards or guest gifts. You can also use them as keychains or bag decorations.
This Christmas embroidery tutorial was made for the magazine J'aime créer spécial Fêtes 2021. Don't hesitate to check their new issues. Download the printable PDF for your labels. For now, only the letters L, M and A are available. You can ask for other letters at the bottom of the page in the question section. Otherwise, to find other letters, type "3D lettering alphabet" in an internet image search engine. You can find free alphabets of this style for personal use. Print them out at the size you want.
Cannetille is a wire wound in the shape of a spring. It looks like a tube that can be cut to the desired size. This tube is used to make gold embroidery. On the other hand, canetille can be used for other things like protecting wired threads and making rings. But it is not exactly the same cannetille used in our tutorial.
Please note that the assortment of felt colors used is no longer available. We propose you in the material list another assortment of colors.

Offset your letters and trace them onto the colored felt of your choice.

Cut out the letters. The part with the pencil will be the back of the letter.

On the diagram, the white and gold lines indicate the direction in which the cannetille is placed. You can use either smooth or curly canetille. Curly cane is less likely to show defects and distortions. Cut a first piece of piping and place it on the letter. Thread a clear sewing thread onto a needle and make a double knot at the end. Stitch on the back and pull the thread over the cannetille. Stitch next to it. We have embroidered with orange thread to give you an example of where to attach the piping. Squeeze well so that the thread goes between the rings and holds the tag.

Each time, cut a new piece of bead to the right length before attaching it to the letter with the clear thread. In this example, we have used 7 pieces of beads for each thickness of the letter, but you can adjust this number.

Here's an example of the curly cane. To give your gift tag an even more festive look, embroider small beads randomly over the cannetille. Don't pull the beads too tightly so that they don't distort the cannetille and stay on top.

Place the embroidered letter on the white felt and cut around it, leaving a 3 mm margin. Cut 15 cm of gold thread to make the tab. Fold it in half and knot the ends. Place the tab between the embroidered felt and the white felt. Put glue on the back of the embroidered letter and place it back on the white felt. Put some weight on top, such as a book, so that the two parts stick together.
