How to set a cabochon?
Use your pliers to spread the prongs of your setting a little. Place your cabochon, then tighten the setting's claws with your pliers.
If you're not quite sure, glue your cabochon in place with a little jewelry glue before closing the setting's claws.

What should I use to clean gold plating?
Here are a few tips, but there are others...
- Water and baking soda. Dissolve the baking soda in hot water, soak a cloth, wipe clean and dry.
- With breadcrumbs. Rub jewel with breadcrumbs.
- With toothpaste. Put a little toothpaste on a cloth moistened with water, rub gently, rinse with clear water, wipe with a fine cloth, then polish with a microfiber cloth.
