There are companies born out of the talent or ambitious genius of a flawless strategic entrepreneur, founded with the help of venture capital and other investment funds.
And then there are more unusual companies, born almost by chance, from an idea that is neither very original nor very brilliant, just seized upon in the spirit of the times as something obvious...
Perles & Co was born in 2004 in Albi, in the mind of Jean-Etienne Estingoy. Since then, the small family business has come a long way.
Nothing predisposed him to the world of pearls and handcrafted creations. However, in 2003, Laurence, our buyer, was the catalyst. She received crystal spinning tops ordered from the United States to make rings. Jean-Etienne was astonished: why import from America pearls produced in Europe, which then cross the Atlantic to be repatriated?
At the time, e-commerce was in its infancy. Hardly anyone in Europe was selling pearls on the Internet. Jean-Etienne coded his own site from his garage, stacking boxes in their apartment. The first orders arrived within a few days.
Word-of-mouth did the rest, notably via the HDP (Histoire de Perles) forum. Social networks didn't yet exist, but the creative community was already taking shape.
Twenty years on, Perles & Co boasts some 50 employees, over 60,000 references, thousands of tutorials, tens of thousands of monthly orders and over 200,000 active members.
The secret? Laurence's anticipation of trends and a committed team who share the same values: responsible DIY with the right products, the right service and the right customer focus.
