DIY Decorative wall weaving

It's cold, the days are getting shorter, and it's the perfect time to stay warm at home. During this winter period, we dream of a warm, cocooning atmosphere in our homes. To achieve this, there's an essential decorating accessory: wool wall weaving.

In this tutorial, you'll discover how to make a wall weave and how to use a loom with different types of wool (fur or sheepskin effect wool, fluid and light wool, oversize wool, etc.). Once you've mastered the basic weaving techniques, you won't be able to stop. You'll also be able to weave different shapes thanks to the different loom shapes: rectangular, square, round.

Discover all the materials you'll need to start weaving wool, and make pretty decorative hangers to give your home a Scandinavian and bohemian chic look.

Many thanks to Estelle from the blog Petit Bout de Chou for this step-by-step guide for beginners, ideal for making your first wall hanging.

We'd love to see how you've decorated your home with this tutorial... so don't hesitate to send us photos on Facebook !

Tutorial steps

Step 1
DIY Decorative wall weaving : Step 1

BEFORE YOU START

Wall weaving is based on the creation of various knots and weaves. In this DIY, three particular techniques have been used: the Rya knot, "wave" weaving and soumak weaving, which creates pretty braids.

For basic techniques such as laying the warp threads on the loom and simple weaving, go to our second wall weaving tutorial, which describes these techniques.

Step 2
DIY Decorative wall weaving : Step 2

How to make bangs with the Rya knot?
To achieve a pretty fringe at the bottom, you can make a few Rya knots. Start by folding the strand into two strands. We work with 4 warp threads grouped in pairs.

Pass the wick around the 4 wires from the outside and bring the two strands up between the two groups of wires (1).

Then simply pass these strands downwards through the loop created to obtain the knot (2). Push the whole assembly down to the bottom of the loom(3).

Step 3

How do I make the "wave" weave?
To initiate a wave in the work, start by creating a few rows of weave (1 & 2). Use the reed to create the wave by pushing the weave (3).

Step 4

Then simply weave a few rows down to under the wave rows (1) and weave a staircase against which you will tackle these rows. This staircase can be created by decreasing the number of stitches woven with each new row, as in the example below (2&3), right up to the wave.

Push the wave against the staircase with the comb to finish the wave.

Step 5

With the XXL wick, create a small pink interlude by passing 1 time underneath, 2 times on top, and so on. Pull the strand tight to give it volume.

Step 6
DIY Decorative wall weaving : Step 6

How do I make a soumak braid?
Instead of working with each of the warp threads separately, take two threads at a time to create a larger pattern. The braid is created in two stages. Always start from the center of the braid and work outwards.

First, pass the wick between the first and second wires. Pass over the first thread and the two-thread group from the outside. Pass the wick under the two-thread group, working backwards. You've formed the first loop of the braid.

Pass over the two groups of two wires. Pass the wick under the first group of two wires, working backwards, and so on until you reach the end of this side of the braid (1).

Push the wick against the finished rows (2).

Step 7
DIY Decorative wall weaving : Step 7

Secondly, continue with the second side of the braid, working backwards. Then pass over the first group of two wires (3). Return from the outside, passing under its two wires (3).

Pass over the next two groups of two wires.

Pass the wick under the first group of two wires, coming back from the outside, and so on until the end of this side of the braid (4).

Step 8
DIY Decorative wall weaving : Step 8

Push this side against the previous one to form the braid (5).

To create volume, tighten the tip of the braid and gradually loosen the mesh with your finger.

Step 9
DIY Decorative wall weaving : Step 9

Continue weaving, alternating waves and braids. Introduce rows with Debbie Bliss yarn (woven here with 4 strands at a time) and with gold cord to vary the texture.

Step 10

As for the finishing touches, to hide the threads behind the work and remove the weave from the loom, refer to the weaving basics tutorial mentioned above, which describes these steps very well.
