Prepare the patterns. Tape together 3 sheets of A4 paper on the longest sides and cut a 60x29 cm rectangle in it. Print out the pattern for the front and lining sides and the tongue. The seam allowances are included.
Here is a sewing video tutorial to help you make a large quilted pouch that will allow you to carry your toiletries, sewing tools or baby's things. This large bag is 28 cm wide, 18 cm high and 14 cm wide when sewn. You can make it with a simple or metal zipper. You will have to be careful not to sew on the zipper because you risk breaking your sewing machine needle. The sewing on the tabs and the zipper on the sides of the kit will be done by hand.
This tutorial is not very difficult but you will still need a good sewing machine and if possible, that you have already sewn in round. This is not a beginner's tutorial. We assume you know the basics of sewing on a sewing machine.
The fabric used for the front of the kit is embroidered double cotton gauze. We recommend a soft fabric that will allow you to make a nice quilt and hide the small defects of sewing. This fabric is available in several colours.
Prepare the patterns. Tape together 3 sheets of A4 paper on the longest sides and cut a 60x29 cm rectangle in it. Print out the pattern for the front and lining sides and the tongue. The seam allowances are included.
Cut a rectangle from the front fabric, the black lining, the cotton wool and the inner lining. Cut the long sides twice from the front fabric, black lining and wadding and then twice from the short side of the inner lining. Cut the rectangle of the tabs only in the front fabric, once.
Start by making the batting. Pin the wadding, the black lining and the double gauze facing you. Draw a line down the centre, then make lines parallel to it every three centimetres. Do exactly the same on both sides except for the inner lining. Stitch the lines straight across, always in the same direction so that the double gauze fabric expands evenly. Once all the lines are sewn, cut off the excess gauze.
Place the lining facing you, the zipper over the lining also facing you and the front fabric facing the zipper and back to you. Pin everything edge to edge at the zipper. Make sure the zipper notches on both sides are protruding. The zipper pull is in the centre. Sew along the zipper, using a straight stitch and a zipper foot. Stop before the zipper pull, lift the presser foot and pull the zipper pull to the other side before finishing your seam. Turn over, press and topstitch to prevent the fabric from getting caught in the zipper later.
Repeat step 5 for the other side of the zipper. Then make the tabs. Fold the rectangle in half widthwise face to face and pin. Sew at 8 mm from the edge with a straight stitch then turn the tube over. Fold it in half lengthwise and cut it in the middle to obtain two identical tabs.
Pin the sides of the kit together. Start by pinning the middles, then little by little the rounds and the other edges of the kit. The corners stick out a little, it's normal, you'll try to pin as close as possible even if it means making a very small notch on the part of the kit at the corner of the side. Also pin the folded tab in half at the zipper and towards the inside of the bag. Sew all around with a straight stitch 1.2 cm from the edge, getting as close as possible to the zipper but without sewing over it as you risk breaking your needle. Start at the top of the kit, make the rounding, then at the corner, stop about 1.2 cm from the edge making sure the bottom part is sewn in, then lift your presser foot with the needle still in the fabric and turn your fabric 90 degrees to continue sewing. Replace the bottom fabric as well so you don't get any wrinkles. Repeat this process on the second corner. Do exactly the same on the second side. Check your seam each time and adjust if necessary.
Open the zipper three quarters of the way. Clip the rounded sides of the lining and pin them in place as before. Stitch them together with a straight stitch 1.2 cm from the edge. Leave a 15 cm opening on one of the right sides of the lining so you can turn the kit inside out. Sew by hand the parts near the zipper and the tabs that you could not sew by machine. To do this, double your thread, make a double knot at the end and sew with the front stitch on the cotton side facing you. Check your work by turning the kit over before continuing.
Once the tabs are sewn in place, turn the kit over. Fold over the edges of the unsewn part of the lining, press and pin. Then close the opening with a straight stitch 1 mm from the edge.
