Zoisite ruby is a natural gemstone whose name derives from the Latin “rubeus,” meaning “red,” and from the name of the mineralogist Sigmund Zois.
The Austrian geologist Sigmund Zois is said to have been the first to discover this gemstone. However, it was the German geologist Abraham Gottlob Werner who officially described it. He paid tribute to his predecessor by naming the stone “zoisite ruby.”
Another name for this natural stone (which was formerly classified as a semi-precious stone) isanyolite; this name refers to the color green in the Maasai language.

The Origin of the Zoisite Ruby

Very little is known about the history of this stone. It features in the oral traditions of East African tribes, where it is regarded as a magical green stone said to have the power to protect hunters from the dangers of nature by rendering them invisible.
It was also used to adorn the jewelry of kings and aristocrats, such as Saint Louis, Charles V, and the Duke of Berry.

Zoisite ruby combines two types of gemstones, so it possesses two sets of properties. It has a hardness of 9 on the Mohs scale for the ruby (making it one of the hardest stones after diamond) and a hardness between 6 and 6.5 on the Mohs scale for the zoisite portion.

Crystal healers recommend purifying and recharging zoiseite ruby regularly, just like all stones, so that it regains its properties and benefits.
To purify it, simply soak it in spring water for a few hours. Be sure to dry it thoroughly with a soft cloth afterward. You can also use smudging by surrounding your gemstone with sage smoke or incense smoke.
To recharge it, place the zoisite ruby under the soft, regenerating light of the moon overnight. To enhance this process, you can place it on a cluster of quartz or an amethyst geode.

What goes well with zoiseite ruby?

The color of this gemstone pairs perfectly with gold, as well as with silver. You can create jewelry using Gold Filled (laminated gold), gold-plated, 925 Sterling Silver, or stainless steel and gold-plated stainless steelfindings.
